Nut's Quest I: Quest for the Cake

If this game seems familiar to you, you're not dreaming or tripping, and no, I'm not referring to a certain Sierra game featuring kings and quests and crowns either.

Nut's Quest I: Quest for the Cake is the original 2004 version of the game that my brother Anton and I would remake into The Idiot's Tale 14 years later.

As an amateur game from the mid-2000s, it's understandably much rougher around the edges by today's standards, but you may find it interesting to see how it inspired the (arguably much better) sequel Nut's Quest II, as well as The Idiot's Tale.

Nut's Quest I is also notable for being my first game that required me to learn a programming language (SLUDGE: Scripting Language for Unhindered Development of a Gaming Environment, which was brand-spanking new at the time) to make the game, instead of relying on WYSIWYG tools like The Games Factory.

• Biggest inspirations: King's Quest; Monty Python and the Holy Grail; and most importantly, an obscure Monkey Island fangame called M:I-2 LeChuck's Revenge that was built upon the idea of reimagining an existing game as a slew of pop culture references. It essentially spawned not just our Nut's Quest games but also The Idiot's Tale several years later.
